IB Physics HL (Higher Level - 1st year of 2 Year Course)

IB Physics Year 1 is a unique course for learning the fundamentals of a broad scope of physics content.  Topics include, but are not limited to, mechanics, circular motion, thermal physics, waves, electricity, magnetism, energy production as well as atomic, nuclear & particle physics. It incorporates laboratory investigations and projects analyzing real-world physics applications. IB Physics Year 1 is a fast-paced and rigorous course that will require students to commit time outside of class for assignments, study, lab write-ups, and IB requirements such as the Internal Assessment and Group 4 Project.

IB Physics Year 1 is required for all students interested in IB Physics Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL) course recognition.  Students have two options regarding IB Physics tracks.

  • IB Physics SL in two years.  Students take an additional year of IB Physics (460 IB PHYSICS Year 2 SL).  The IB Physics SL test is taken after year two only.  This option gives students more time to become familiar with the course content and its applications.
  • IB Physics HL in two years.  Students take an additional year of IB Physics (463 IB PHYSICS Year 2 HL).  The IB Physics HL test is taken after year two only.  This option exposes students to additional physics content while reviewing the fundamentals learned in year 1.

Students enrolled in this course must take the IB exam at their own expense.  Students do not need to be IB diploma candidates to take this course.

An “A” or “B” in Honors Chemistry or an “A” in Chemistry with a teacher recommendation, as well as a “B” or higher in Honors Algebra 2, is a prerequisite for IB Physics.  Students who do not meet this prerequisite should select an alternate IB Group 4 course: IB Computer Science SL or IB Environmental Systems and Societies SL.

Prerequisites

Biology; A in Chemistry or B in Honors Chemistry; B in Honors Algebra 2.  Suggested Concurrent Math Course:  Functions, Statistics, and Trigonometry or IB Mathematics – 11th grade
